According to the Dragon Page interview with Jim Butcher, The Codex Alera was written on a dare to write with not just one, but two bad ideas. the first was the lost roman legion, and the second was pokemon.
I think the series was awesome, also. I put my recommendation for it.
Adam, Adam, Adam… How could you forget the sixth element, wood? I mean okay its hardly used, and only two named characters who have strong wood furies doesnt also have strong earth furies, and one of its two powers are done better by wind…. but even so, wood needs love too.
