My picks:

1)Harry Potter & the Deathly Hollows, Part 2 – In my heart of hearts, I would love for Cap to dethrone Harry Potter. Truly, I would, if only to show that it would be possible.

But realistically, nothing is going to stop Harry Potter until Labor Day. It is a cash machine without peer.

2)Captain America – As the tag-lines for both Cap and Iron Man say, the best heroes are Made in America. I expect Cap to do just as well as Iron Man. And that will be pretty tricky, seeing as how HP7B has dibs on screens for the indefinite future. One theater here in Columbia has more screens showing Friends with Benefits than Captain America due to the overwhelming urge to keep as many 3D screens for Harry Potter as possible. If we had better screen parity, I would expect something more, but that’s life. So Cap comes in at #2.

3) Friends with Benefits – Mila Kunis & what’s his nuts. A self-referential romantic comedy about avoiding romantic comedy cliches. Probably going to do okay. Any other time of the year, this would probably do better than okay, but here we are, so we deal.

4) Horrible Bosses – Again with the appeal of Jason Bateman…meh.

5) Transformers: Dark of the Moon – It’s had a strong run with a strong opening. Now it’s on the downslope.

1. Harry Potter 7-2
2.Captain America
3.Friends with Benefits
4.Horrible Bosses
5. Transformers: bark at the Moon

and the original ladyfriend Sam says:
1. Harry potter DH2
2.Captain America (fuck yeah)
3.F w/ B
4.Transformers 3
5. Horrible Bosses

First off I want to say: Darn you Pooh Bear! and d*mn you Disney for releasing a TV special as an actual movie.

Ok, that done, I’d like nothing more than to pick Cap as #1 and be right where it looks like everyone else is wrong (especially since Tony kinda called me out as vulnerable in the last results show). But I arrive at the same place as everyone else, and I can’t…
1) Harry Potter DH 7-2, cause it would take HUGE drop-off to get low enough, and with all the people that stayed away from the madness of opening weekend, it wont. Maybe if it had sucked, but it didn’t.

2) Captain America– this may be the best comics adaptation of the year, and may catch fire, especially if reaction out of the San Diego Comic Con/super geek gathering is good. But the best open for a comics movie this year is just under $66 million. If this exceeds that gross by 10% and HP7-2 falls a lot, yeah, maybe. But a whole lotta maybe, so #2 it is. (My 13 year old nephew keeps the faith. Or just guessed. He does that a lot.)

3) Friends w/ Benefits– what else could go here? I’ve seen more ads for this than Cap, strangely enough, and awareness is high, I think. It should at least top $10 mil.

4) Horrible Bosses– Recent weekends have seen comedies like this one holding strong. It may be that they are the only alternative to the big top/center ring stuff, or maybe even re-watchable where the spectacle stuff only gets one viewing.

5) Transformers 3– lost a TON of screens for this weekend, either to HP7-2 or Cap, but both steal audience from this, lets face it, highly-grossing but prob’ly not all that good summer movie.

and by the end of typing this I’ve almost talked myself into putting Cap at #1, so I’m just gonna keep repeating “the numbers just aren’t there” and hit…

… you know what? I DID talk myself into changing it. So with the caveat that I’m actually allowed to do this, my revised, I-may-be-crazy-but-go-bold-or-go-home picks:
1) Captain America
2)HP7-2
3)Friends w/ Benefits
4)Horrible Bosses
5) Transformers 3

I’m late, so here’s my uninformed picks real quick.
Looks like the tough part is deciding who will be 4th and 5th:

1) Captain America – I’m betting on America baby!
2) HP-7.2 – Everyone watched it the first weekend, they won’t watch it again til its out on dvd.
3) Friends with Benefits – this will do third if for no other reason then the sheer amount of advertising
4) Transformers 3
5) Horrible Bosses

1 Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2
2 Captain America
3 Friends with Benefits
4 Horrible Bosses
5 Transformers: Dark of the Moon

After seeing how few screens Captain America is in my town. I am happy I decided to put it #2.

Uriah – How dare you doubt Jason Bateman?!? Go watch Arrested Development!

BD – I always support people who are going with their gut

Tim – You need to see Captain America. I think you’ll enjoy it

Ok, so I’ve heard about you guys from Darryl and Menolly (they’re family), and it sounds like a lot of fun. Obviously, it’s too late to go for the 22nd (Captain America never stood a chance in hell of beating Harry), so I’m gonna go ahead and put my bid in for this Friday.

1. Harry Potter 7.2: I agree, Labor Day will see Harry at number 1, especially with the upcoming competition.

2. Captain America: I think it will get better box office this weekend then the ending one.

3. Cowboys and Aliens: Its a close call, but I think the action hype is going to make this beat Friends.

4. Friends with Benefits: This actually is a pretty good movie, and I think it deserves to keep a good score.

Number 5 is the hard one for me. Smurfs, or Crazy Stupid Love. I simply dont know what the public thinks about the smurfs. So,

5. Crazy, Stupid, Love
