Wow.

That’s all I can say. Wow.

I hope that Spy Kids – All the time in the World does as well as you all seem to think it will. I thought it would do okay, but no idea how okay. Can Jessica Alba as the working mom spy bring this franchise back?

Wow indeed.

And Ouch! a 19 and happy for it (I’ve played along at home since you’ve started, so I do know….)

Ok, here’s my thing for this week: No one wants to see a movie. They have to be convinced. So my guesses (and they are guesses, any maths I did had everything all bunched up too close to call) each start with my reason to see it.

1) Conan- “Game of Thrones” The guy playing Conan was Khal Drogo. I’ve seen the most ads for this one, and Green Lantern keeps them from being the most overblown of the summer. The 3D is probably least useless here, and it’s the movie I’d pick if I went to a movie this weekend. (But I’m a Robert E. Howard fan. Where’s my Solomon Kane movie???)

2) Fright Night- “David Tennant” The former Dr. Who is in the Roddy McDowell role, making many of Dr. Who’s legion of fans happy. It also has a great cast & trailer (even as Tennant isn’t in the trailer, not that Dr. Who fans need to be told he’s there.) It drops the campiness for a serious take, a nice antidote to sparkly vamps. I saw no ads for this, and I think its positive reviews and word of mouth will make this play out longer, but lower at start. I could be talked into this one.

3) Spy Kids 4 “hey new Spy Kids movie!” Except that the last one was 8 years ago, so your kids look at you like the sullen teenagers they now are. And the ads don’t say 4 anywhere but the 4D (silliness!) so I see this as at least a soft reboot. The trailer’s good (for kids), and you should never bet against a kids movie in summer (See: Smurfs box office.) I’ve seen more ads for this one that Fright Night, too. Still, it’s an expensive prospect to take the family out to see a movie (especially 3D) so parents may wait for the DVD. I refuse to believe that 4D would be a draw (except maybe those sullen teens.)

4) The Help- “I heard this was good” The strong showing last week could lead to a less than 50% drop off and even a #1 showing. But fewer screens and a fan base less likely to go out means that I randomly assign this to #4.

5) Rise o/t Planet o/t Apes- “We still haven’t seen that one yet.” Which is great if you’re already at the theater, but not so much if you’re still at home. This, I think, is what theater owners want you to do, as there are relatively more showings (at least near me), but then again, theater owners make more from these tickets than new releases. If I was out, I could be talked into this, but Conan is still the only one I’d leave the house for.

I’m really tempted to not make predictions this week. The way the core system works, you are ranked better if you avoid weeks where you would get a low score. And this week is F*d up.

Frak it. I’m addicted to making predictions. Okay close my eyes and rattle these off quick:

1. spy kids
2. the help
3. fright night
4. conan
5. Rise of the planet of the apes

Well, there goes my average…

I look at the $33.4 million dollar opening weekend that Spy Kids 3D had and that speaks to me, even if it did come out 8 years ago.

However, if you want a completely different take on this weekend’s predictions then check out this article by Brandon Gray over at Box Office Mojo. his picks and projected totals are toward the bottom.

Uriah- thanks for the link. I may have to try and find that. Why a Puritan avenger type can’t find a U.S audience eludes me. Maybe the movie was to subtle.

And I’d also like to say: poop. Though my idea that no one (well, relative to the last 10 weekends or so) would see a movie last weekend seems to have been true…
