Back Seat Box Office #56

Expect some audio oddness in this episode due to Andrew’s Skype connection being intermittently wonky for part of the show. Also, let’s go ahead and throw the explicit tag out there.

Amongst the hosts, Jonathan was first this week with 24 points, Tony was second with 21 points and Andrew was third with 20 points. Five weeks into Season Two Tony is in first with 21.4 points, Andrew is in second with 19.2 points and Jonathan is in third with 18.6 points.

Two 80’s remakes battling to beat rock e’m sock e’m robots, and a solid comedy cast in a movie about birdwatching? oooooh- kay…

1) Footloose- just let the kids dance!
2) The Thing- could be lower, but as I’ll see it this weekend, I think I have to support it here.
3) Real Steel- is The Thing audience competition for this? I think so.
4) Ides of March- slower fall off for this type of pic, I think.
5) The Big Year- a risk, it could tank. Is Jack Black the new Anna Farris? I hope not.

What a stack of misery is this weekend’s releases!

1) Real Steel – A Footloose remake without Kevin Bacon is not going to take this down.

2) Footloose – I think the Gleeks, assuming this is rated sufficiently low, may take this to #2. Failing to get Kevin Bacon in this re-make is a critical mistake. If they’d had him in it, they might have gotten more traction.

3) The Thing – It’s not torture porn, but it is not really sci-fi either. Can this script function as horror for today’s audiences? I don’t know enough to be sure.

4) Ides of March – I see this on a slow burn out, so I think it will stay here.

5) The Big Year – I’ve seen ads for this film, and I still have no idea what it is about. Birdwatching? Male insecurity? Mid-life crises? All three? It seems to be following the trend of the new fall TV schedule, where men can’t seem to figure anything out, so they just fumble around while their better halves watch and mock them. I’m going to bank on the power of Steve Martin and a slight bump from Jack Black to HOPE that this makes #5.

And here’s Menolly’s picks for the weekend of October 14 – 16, 2011:
1. Real Steel
2. Footloose
3. Ides Of March
4. The Thing
5. Dolphin Tale
