The reason the fellowship of the ring was such a boring read may be due to what I’ve heard:
They say that Tolkien was wanting to make a sequel to the hobbit, and had some hobbits wandering the countryside and having adventures, to no special purpose. And after writing about a book’s worth, he realized it was boring. Then he came up with the idea of the war of the ring, and ended up using a bunch of his previous attempt as filler in the first book.
Don’t know if that’s actually true.

not all that far from it, early drafts were similar to the hobbit in structure and were much light-hearted than the final version. also aragorn started out as a one-footed hobbit named trotter.
