Now, looking at this weekend (1/20 – 1/22), it’s going to be a bumpy ride…

1)Underworld: Awakening – I’m going to go for broke and say that Kate Beckinsale’s Selene in black leather and ass-kicking boots can beat down the manliness of Mark Wahlberg in Contraband. Hot vampire chick with guns beats blue-collar caper film. It has been a while since the luke-warm Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (Rhona Mitra though, mmmmmmmmm….tasty…) so that might slow it down. Then again, it is a return to the original characters of Selene and (possibly) Michael Corvin. It has been interesting to see how the success of the original built a pretty solid franchise. Let’s see how this one does.

2) Contraband – Mark Wahlberg’s work is good though, don’t get me wrong. It’s big enough that I think it will stay at #2.

3) Haywire – I’m sorry, but I’m a guy, and in the words of the immortal Spike Spiegel, I like a girl who can kick my ass. Gina Carrano beating up a variety of big names in movies (Fassbender, MacGregor, Tatum) in a Soderbergh movie. Despite being pushed back 3 times, I think this will do fair. Not great, but fair.

4) Incredibly Loud & Extremely Close – This is likely a tear-jerker, but an interesting post-9/11 script. I’m uncertain if it will do all that well, but it is on a lot of screens.

5) Red Tails – I saw this movie in 1995 with a lot of the same cast. It was called the Tuskegee Airmen on HBO. It might not have had the LucasArts CGI dogfighting that looks like it was pulled straight from The Phantom Menace, but it had a better cast (Lawrence Fishburne, Malcolm Warner, Andre Braugher, Courtney Vance…). I might see this after a few weeks (assuming it stays) just to see P-51’s face off against Me-262’s.
