Weekend Box Office: May 20 – 22

#1 Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides from Buena Vista debuts at #1 with an opening weekend gross of $90.1 million in 4155 theaters. Budget was $250 million.

#2 Bridesmaids from Universal holds at #2 with a weekend gross of $20.8 million (-20.4%) in 2937 theaters (+19). Total gross to date is $59.3 million. Budget was $32.5 million.

#3 Thor from Paramount drops from #1 to #3 with a weekend gross of $15.4 million (-55.5%) in 3924 theaters (-39). Total gross to date is $145.3 million. Budget was $150 million.

#4 Fast Five from Universal drops from #3 to #4 with a weekend gross of $10.5 million (-48.3%) in 3622 theaters (-171). Total gross to date is $186.1 million. Budget was $125 million.

#5 Priest from Screen Gems drops from #4 to #5 with a weekend gross of $4.7 million (-68.2%) in 2864 theaters (no change). Total gross to date is $23.8 million. Budget was $60 million.

#6 Rio from Fox drops from #5 to #6 with a weekend gross of $4.6 million (-43.4%) in 2593 theaters (-336). Total gross to date is $131.6 million. Budget was $90 million.

Rounding out the top 12 are:

#7 Jumping the Broom drops from #6 to #7 with a weekend gross of $3.7 million (-47.6%) in 1472 theaters (-563). Total gross to date is $31.3 million. Budget was $6.6 million.

#8 Something Borrowed drops from #7 to #8 with a weekend gross of $3.5 million (-48.8%) in 2606 theaters (-298). Total gross to date is $31.5 million. Budget was $35 million.

#9 Water for Elephants drops from #8 to #9 with a weekend gross of $2.1 million (-48.2%) in 1894 theaters (-531). Total gross to date is $52.4 million. Budget was $38 million.

#10 Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family drops from #9 to #10 with a weekend gross of $0.9 million (-56.8%) in 912 theaters (–537). Total gross to date is $51.7 million. Budget is unknown.

#11 Soul Surfer drops from #10 to #11 with a weekend gross of $0.9 million (-49.1%) in 984 theaters (-484). Total gross to date is $40.6 million. Budget was $18 million.

#12 Midnight in Paris debuts at #2 with an opening weekend gross of $0.5 million in 6 theaters. Budget was $30 million.

The combined gross of the top 12 movies this weekend was $158.3 million (+22.9%).

New movies debuting in wide release this weekend include The Hangover Part 2 and Kung-Fu Panda 2. Both of these movies open on Thursday.

A note on “Gross”: On average, studios will earn approximately 55 percent of the final gross.
