Back Seat Box Office #47

(Note: Due to a scheduling conflict, I didn’t have time to edit this episode.  I’ll edit this episode next week and add music and whatnot.  Thanks for listening and putting up with the unedited ums, uhs, dead air and naughty words. Thanks! – Tony)

You know, I’m totally guessing here. None of the new movies seem that great to me and they don’t feel like they are going to do too great. The top four could come out in any order in my opinion.

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes – Apes rule Humans drool
2. Final Destination 5 – I’m not interested in seeing it, but I figure the teenagers will be but not enough of them. The last three movies have each been the ‘final’ final destination so people are going to start not even bothering.
3. The Help – I have no interest in seeing this movie and the few commercials I’ve seen havent helped but there has been some hype so it probably will do good
4. 30 minutes or less – think I’ll go see this this weekend. I’d like to think it would do better but some of the reviews for this have been mediocre and the ads don’t inspire much confidence in me.
5. Smurfs – just because.

wow, many choices seem too close to call. Hate to just go with my gut since blowing it could see me fall on that darned leader board with only weeks to go, but that’s what I’m doing anyway: (edit: sorta, this changed while typing it)

1) Rise of the Planet of the Apes- I suspect a bigger drop off than the usual 50%, making it close to what FD5 might pull in. But a quick check of area show-times shows a real lack of FD5 screenings, while Apes remains strong.

2) 30 Minutes or Less- opens this weekend, where The Help has already started draining its audience of book clubs by opening Wed. Plus, more screens! It may only do well this week, but that’s all it needs to do.

3) Final Destination 5- the numbers I’ve looked at don’t support this (it should be higher), but I think there’s not enough interest for a bigger opening, added to the fact that 3D-avoidance could drag it lower (though this could bite me, as this is the type of movie where 3D works well)

4) The Help- fewer screens + early open + comps that have done poorly means #4. Opening early is smart for the movie, but I only care about the weekend…

5) The Smurfs- I’d really rather put Glee 3D here, but I’m almost certain Smurfs will be 5 or 6, and Glee could be #5, or #10. And wouldn’t Glee fans already have seen them on tour?

my picks for the weekend of August 12 – 14, 2011:
1. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
2. Final Destination 5
3. 30 Minutes Or Less
4. The Help
5. Glee

All of these suck. As for me, I’m going to see Kung Fu Panda at the dollar theatre.

Menolly’s picks for the weekend of August 12 – 14, 2011:
1. Final Destination 5
2. Glee
3. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
4. Cowboys And Aliens
5. Smurfs

Mrs. Beast’s picks for the weekend of August 12 – 14, 2011:
1. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
2. The Help
3. Glee the 3D Concert
4. 30 Minutes Or Less
5. Final Destination 5
