Ok, lets get this weekend started! Two new movies with small-side theater counts and one a horror film w/ almost no buzz? (Like that means something?) against a weird post-holiday mix of hold-overs w/ buzz, action and romance? It’s gonna be ugly out there, and that’s not even counting the snowstorm I keep hearing about…
1) Identity Thief- yeah, you heard me. This almost took #1 in it’s second week, and will probably have a smaller % drop again, so I’m slotting it #1 in it’s 3rd week.
2) A Good Day to Die Hard- second week drop puts it at about $12 million. If my #3 pick (which draws the same audience) had even a slightly higher screen count it would be here.
3) Snitch- but it doesn’t have the screens, so it’s #3. I think The Rock could (and should?) take Bruce Willis, but Die Hard has about 1,000 more screens (and bigger booms, no doubt.) That being said, on a bad weekend, the movie that people seek out could do well, so I wouldn’t be too surprised if this goes higher than #3.
4) Safe Haven- falls about half to $10-11 million, so about here, I think. It could also do worse, fall a lot, but I’ma gonna risk it.
5) Escape from Planet Earth- did far better than I thought it would last week, and holds the kids movie slot in theaters (plus a nice screen count.) But on a potentially bad weekend, that may not help, and the difference (last weekend) between this and Safe Haven is too great.
And no, I’m skipping the horror movie this week, despite the genre helping me out this past month– low screen count, tiny awareness factor and no reviews on RT means I gotta leave it out. With the scary movies, you gotta know when to hold e’m, and know when to fold e’m…
