BSP Episode 116: Highlander

There can be only one.

We wish there were only one.

Since there aren’t we decided to pick the only one worth talking about.

I have to say I was a bit disappointed in this episode. I bet if you took all of the actual talk about the movie and pasted it together–not including the repeated mentions of hooking swords up to car batteries–I’d bet you had more content in the Porky’s episode.

I got the feeling no one really liked this movie, which is also disappointing. It’s one of my favorites, in spite of its production gaffs.

And for all the jokes you made about it, I don’t think anyone mentioned the french guy playing a Scot. You talked about the scot playing the egyptian/spaniard, but not the even more grievous casting offense!

I, too, am of the mindset that any and all of the sequels “didn’t happen”. Each one of those was like a revision of the matrix that I kept waking up from. But if you want to hack on something, try having a “bad dream” episode where you rake the rest of the franchise over the coals…including the TV show.

Anyway, I think this was a missed opportunity to relive an 80’s cult favorite. And you can’t have a do over because THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! (there I said it).

I stil love the show, of course. Later.

As is often the case with movies one of us doesn’t like to talk, that person tends to pull the conversation away from the chosen topic with random tangential diversions. When none of us want to talk about the movie, this is what happens.

I don’t know that I would necessarily say that I don’t like this movie, because I do. I think it’s more a matter of being disappointed by the nostalgia of it. Having built such ire for the imaginary sequels of this movie, going back to the source felt kinda like going back, as an adult, to the travelling carnivals that you used to love as a kid only to find that the place is full of guys who can be identified as “the guy with a weird stain on his shirt”, “the guy who has a weird stain on the front of his pants”, “the guy who has the weird stain on the back of his pants”, etc. It was disappointing to see that this movie didn’t really stand up and have the same sense of wonder that it once held for us.

And while we did bag on it during the course of the show, I think that, at least for me, our lack of conversation about the ‘topic’ might not come from hate but from trying onto talk too badly about a movie that we had once loved and were anxious to discuss before we had re-watched the movie.

I think we’d mentally set the bar too high for it and just didn’t back off from that… and after a while we were like a pack of sharks in a feeding frenzy.

Jim, Thanks for the feedback… and yeah, we dropped the ball on the French guy playing a Scot.

My comment wasn’t meant to be a hack on the show. I actually like it when the conversation strays, most of the time. The Neval Longbottom stuff is funny as hell. It just usually makes it back to the subject at hand in a more timely fashion.
