Shyamalan Beats The Hulk In International Markets

M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, toplining Mark Wahlberg, exceeded expectations in its international debut, just as it did far better domestically ($30.5 million) than predicted. Shyamalan has had a strong track record at the international B.O., with his film grossing more than $800 million.

Hulk, won the June 13-15 frame domestically and both Happening and Hulk did solid opening biz across the Euro box office, although the ongoing European soccer tournament is proving a distraction to male auds. Yet even summer tentpoles Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Sex and the City are still reeling ’em in.

In the U.K., Hulk bit off a big piece of green as it stormed to the top of the charts with $6.3 million on 484 engagements. The superhero pic toplining Ed Norton also netted the best screen average of any pic in the top 10 — $13,019.

Shyamalan’s fourth-place Happening shrugged off poor reviews to make a decent $3.2 million for Fox. Screen average of $8,151 proved a pleasant surprise.

In Italy, Happening took the numero uno spot, Pic bowed at $1.7 million on 363, proving that Shyamalan’s Italo fan base remains loyal in spite of soccer.

The German box office grew by nearly 18% despite the soccer fever gripping the nation, due in part to cooler temperatures and rain throughout much of the country. Sex remained on top in its third session with $2.8 million on its way to a $17.9 million cume, followed by The Crystal Skull, which continued to do well in its fourth lap, grossing $2.1 million toward a $24.7 million total.

Placing No. 3, Fox’s Happening was the best performing new entry in Germany, taking in $1.7 million from 550, well ahead of Shyamalan’s last pic, 2006’s Lady in the Water, which managed $452,817 on its opening weekend and went on to cume just over $1 million.

In France, Happening had a strong first five days, with many critics being far kinder than they were in the U.S. or U.K. Its Wednesday-to-Sunday run earned Fox $4.7 million.

In Spain, where Hulk has yet to bow, Happening comfortably landed the top spot with $3.4 million at 384 for Fox. Pic, which bested exhibs’ expectations, benefited from a warm reception from local critics. Copy average of $8,695 was also a weekend best.

Weekend Box Office For June 20 – 22

#1 Get Smart from Warner Bros. takes the #1 position this weekend bringing in $39.1 million and knocking Universal’s The Incredible Hulk  down to the #3 position. Get Smart showed in 3911 theaters and cost roughly $80 million to make.

#2 Kung Fu Panda from Dreamworks keeps the #2 spot for a second weekend bringing in $21.7 million, down 35% from last weekend. Gross so far is $155,596,000. Kung Fu Panda showed in 4,053 theaters, thats down 83 theaters over last weekend. Budget was roughly $130 million.

#3 The Incredible Hulk from Universal tumbles to the #3 spot in its second weekend bringing in $21.5 million, thats down 61% from last weekend. The Incredible Hulk showed in 3,508 theaters, up 3 over last weekend. Budget was roughly $150 million.

#4 The Love Guru from Paramount debuts this weekend in the #4 spot taking in $14 million. The Love Guru showed in 3012 theaters and cost $62 million.

Rounding out the top 10 are:

#5 The Happening: Weekend Gross: $10,000,000 down 67.2% / Theaters: 2,986 down 480 / Gross $50,267,000 / Budget: $60 million.

#7 You Don’t Mess with the Zohan: Weekend Gross: $7,200,000 down 56.0% / Theaters: 3,278 down 188 / Gross $84,055,000 / Budget: $90 million.

#8 Sex And The City: Weekend Gross: $6,465,000 million, down % 34 / Theaters: 2442 down 713 / Gross: $132,385,000 / Budget $65 million.

#9 Iron Man: Weekend Gross: $4,002,000 down 28.8% / Theaters: 1,912 down 491 / Gross $304,788,000 / Budget: $140 million.

Old episodes finally fixed

So, after making some changes over to the Back Seat Producers and extending the feed to pull more files into the feed than it had previously, I was reminded of a report I got from a fan that some of the old episodes weren’t downloading properly.

Specifically, these were the “On the Lot” episodes. Most of them had one problem or another that prevented them from being successfully downloaded.

After some trial and error, I have re-uploaded each of the offending files and fixed some of the links within the feed, so if you have tried unsuccessfully to pull these episodes down in the past and are really interested in listening, (Seriously, it was a reality TV show that lasted only one season, I won’t be offended if you skip them.) they are out there.

Thanks for your patience in this. And to make up for it, in just a few hours (tomorrow morning sometime, cause, dude, do you see what time this is posted?) our next episode will be released… early!

Theatrical Review: Get Smart

Maxwell Smart is an analyst with the covert secret agency CONTROL. Max is very good at his job, but now yearns to be an agent in the field. After passing the tests that he needs to in order to advance, the arch forces of the enemy agency KAOS threaten to strike in a devastating way. Now it’s up to Max to find out for sure what is being done and to stop them.

And that’s a very loose description of the premise to Get Smart, a movie updating and re-imagining of the classic comedy TV series from the 1960s…

… and the new winner to the title of “Worst Movie Of The Year,” and here it is, I thought it was going to take some time before something could take that title away from M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening and yet this movie does so with ease.

This is supposed to be a comedy and yet, I didn’t laugh at a thing in the film and so right there it fails and fails miserably. Even when this is relying on some of the old chestnuts from the original series (with one notable exception), this just fails.

And the reason for that failure is on two counts- it’s ill-conceived as a movie, and the character of Maxwell Smart has been seriously compromised.

Now, y’see, back when the show was on, it was genuinely funny and being the brainchild of comedy legends Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, you’d expect it to be. The TV series was a spoof of spy movies, it was a low budget and very small show, and yet it was loaded with big, but two-dimensional characters, and the biggest of them all was Maxwell Smart. And it was also ridiculously rapid-fire with it’s jokes and gags. And also, I loved the original series, I think it was one of the all-time greats in television comedy.

Here… here, director Peter Segal gets it entirely wrong. First, this is trying to be an action movie with lots of comedic overtones, and it’s also very big, especially in consideration of it’s source, and the biggest thing that they do wrong in the midst of all of that is that they try to make you think it’s real, and that was never the spirit of the original show by any means.

The second thing that they get wrong is in the character of Maxwell Smart. Now Don Adams was a genius and he knew just how Smart was to be played. Smart was the GREATEST secret agent in the world, especially in his own mind, even if he screwed up more often than not, but above all he was extremely confident. Here, they’ve turned Maxwell Smart into the most politically correct pussy on the planet, and there’s some small part of me that can’t help but wonder if this is in some way partly due to Steve Carell and what he’s been doing in some of his other movies lately. This Maxwell Smart’s main drive is to understand that his enemies in the world are people first and if you get to know the person, you then find the weakness, but his way of getting to the weakness is with compassion more than anything else…

… oh for cryin’ out loud…

This movie is nearly two hours long, and that’s because it’s trying to be an action movie and it’s pacing itself that way, and when it throws in it’s gags, it just falls flat and even worse than that… boring. I certainly had plenty of criticism with The Love Guru but one thing that they certainly get is that it is supposed to be a comedy, and in comparison to Get Smart, it’s comedy genius.

Now there is plenty here for the Get Smart TV series fan, lots of bits and sight gags, and every now and then, Carell well spout out one of the lines that Max used in the day and because of the change that they made with Smart himself, that line just feel like Steve Carell saying the line by rote and little else.

On paper, Steve Carell should be perfect for the part… that is if he would be willing to play something just as two-dimensional as what Maxwell Smart was (and even moreso if the movie would’ve been willing to go that route- this movie is looking at Mission: Impossible when it should be looking at Airplane! or Blazing Saddles), but here, he just seems like amateur night or what you’d get if Michael Scott (his character from The Office) was trying to act. Anne Hathaway plays Smart’s partner, Agent 99, and first off, she just looks fantastic and also looks like she would have a real affinity with being in a legitimate action film, it’s just too bad that she’s in this one. And her character has been changed as well, in particularly to be a little more shrewish than anything else. Alan Arkin is The Chief, the head of CONTROL, Dwayne Johnson is Agent 23, the coolest agent on the planet and a good pal of Max’s (of course here every one calls him Maxie) and Terence Stamp is Siegfried, Smart’s opponent at KAOS. All three of these guys do the best they can with what they’ve got, it’s just that what they got is incredibly weak. There’s a brief cameo by a surprise guest star, and that’s the notable exception that I mentioned near the start of this review- this bit is funny (though not a gut-buster, but still amusing), it’s in keeping with the show, and it really should’ve been followed up on about to more times in the film, but it was pretty much left alone after that, but still this moment is the best part of the film.

So you don’t believe me, it can’t possibly be this bad? Fine… go see it for yourself and then come back here and try and tell me just how much you laughed during this. Go ahead, I dare you… do it…

Get Smart is as ill-conceived as a TV-to-movie adaptation/remake/re-imagining can get and even though it tries to have some echoes of the original series, those echoes fall flat due to a poor conception of the film and a dramatically ill-conceived new interpretation of it’s lead character. As such, you have a comedy here that’s just not funny on virtually any level (with the one exception) and if a comedy isn’t funny then it’s a bad movie, and this one is just about as bad as it gets. About a half hour before this ended, I was just about ready to ask if anyone wanted to leave, but we stood through it all the way until it’s incredibly sappy end… oh I wish we had, but then I couldn’t pass on this cautionary review on to you…

Right now… Get Smart is the worst movie of the year, period.

Theatrical Review: The Love Guru

The renowned spiritual guru, Guru Pitka, has found himself always being the second best to the famous Deepak Chopra and now he’s got the opportunity to turn things around and get himself his appearance on Oprah, thus elevating himself above the aforementioned Mr. Chopra. All the Guru Pitka has to do is help the hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, with their star player, Darren Roanoke. Roanoke’s girl, Prudence has left him and left him as a shaken player. Pitka’s task is right in front of him and along the way he’s hoping to catch the fancy of the team’s owner, the uber-sexy Jane Bullard.

The Love Guru is the latest film from writer and star Mike Myers, who’s obviously best known for being on Saturday Night Live, the Wayne’s World films and the Austin Powers movies and the Guru Pitka is his latest character.

I’ve got to give Mike Myers credit for creating something pretty original here as far as the character goes, I certainly don’t recall anything like this out there recently anyway.

The movie has it’s moments, some that are actually really funny, but for the most part, it falls pretty flat. Part of this is with the main character, Pitka, himself, who’s constantly winking at the audience, and thus kind of staying detached from the whole thing. The other part is just that the actions them self are just displayed in an order like they’re something to be hit as opposed to happening naturally. There’s also an over-reliance on bathroom humor, again some of which is quite funny, but a lot of it just falling flat.

Some of the segments that consistently fall flat for me are bits with the announcers for the Maple Leafs played by Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan. They’re trying too hard and there’s just too many of these segments in the film and none of them really work.

Funnier stuff is there courtesy of Verne Troyer, who has the best line in the film seen right over the end credits.

Jessica Alba is Jane Bullard, and she’s little more than eye candy in the film, which really I don’t have that much of a problem with her in that capacity.

Ben Kingsley and Justin Timberlake are also in the film and they both do a decent enough job with their parts, but it’s still nothing to bust a gut over.

But most of the fault is with the story construction itself and Myers’ portrayal as Pitka without any real sense of urgency to his character, he’s more there just doing a series of set pieces (some of which are good) but there’s really nothing there with a good through-line.

You might have a good time with this, but I’d more advice this as a rental or watching on cable down the road. Overall though, I thought this was pretty uneven with a few good laughs here and there, but nothing that really says run out and see it (but I must admit, they got me with the trailer to this, I thought that the trailer was great and it really made me want to see it), so catch it at your own risk…

Indians Appear Divided Over "Love Guru" As Myers Shows Interest In Bollywood

Movie executives at Paramount Pictures honored their promise to preview Mike Myers’ new film The Love Guru for concerned Hindu leaders in Los Angeles in an effort to ally fears of prejudice and stereotyping. But the screening has only served to bolster the religious opposition to the film, which Zed and his followers insist is disrespectful to Hindus and their beliefs.

Zed has now urged Hindus around the world to boycott the movie, claiming the picture “lampoons Hinduism and Hindu concepts and uses Hindu terms frivolously”. After attending the screening on Thursday (19Jun08), Zed rages, “The Love Guru is even more denigrating than we earlier perceived from the information gathered from trailers, websites and other sources.

“Mike Myers’ guru instigates a bar fight, repeatedly narrates penis jokes, mocks yoga – one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy, wears female jewelry, mocks the concept of third eye, makes disciples drink tea passed through his nose, orders alligator soup, induces elephant copulation in front of the crowd, introduces himself as ‘His Holiness’, lives in a lavish ashram staffed with scantily clad maids, and whose goal in life seems to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show.” And the Hindu leader has suggested other religious groups should give the film a miss.

He adds, “Today it is Hinduism, tomorrow Hollywood might attempt to denigrate another religion.” “Hinduism is often misunderstood and wrongly portrayed outside India. Movies like this bring more confusion and create stereotypes in the minds of audience.”

Meanwhile Sify.com,  a website covering Bollywood and Indian cinema, said of the movie “The Love Guru, which is inspired by new age guru Deepak Chopra and pokes fun at the way the West is co-opting spirituality and not the religion or Hinduism, as some protesting Hindus believed after watching just the trailer.” 

Sify.com also quoted Myers interest in working with Bollywood saying that he would “love to be in a Bollywood film.” “If a Bollywood director wants to hire a 45-year-old Scottish-English-Canadian actor, who does comedy, I’m their man.” said Myers talking to the South Asian press.

Best-selling author and spiritual teacher Deepak Chopra, who also makes a cameo appearance in the film, called Zed’s campaign “a cry for importance.” “It’s a sign that your faith has become a cover up for all your insecurities because you can’t even take a joke,” “As viewers will find out when the movie is released this summer, no one is more thoroughly skewered in it than I am — you could even say that I am made to seem preposterous.” Chopra further called the outcry from Zed “religious propaganda.” 

The Love Guru opened in the US Friday, June 20. No Indian release date was available.

As may of the comments have indicated about episode 64, Adam and Tony #2 weren’t really prepared for the discussion of the movies.

Friend of the show, Phil Hicks (Red Earth Saga) has challenged Tony Mast to a battle of movie trivia to reclaim the honor lost by Tony #2 and Adam.

There will be three rounds of contest between the two:

Stan Winston Dies At 62

Hollywood legend Stan Winston, the Oscar-winning special-effects maestro responsible for bringing the dinosaurs of Jurrasic Park and other iconic movie creatures to life, has died. He was 62. 

According to a representative from Stan Winston Studio, Winston died at his home in Malibu surrounded by family on Sunday evening after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma.

Working with such directors as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Tim Burton in a career spanning four decades, Winston is responsible for some of Tinseltown’s most famous creatures and effects including The Terminator and the Aliens. He also came up with the design of the Predator and worked on films like Edward Scissorhands and Iron Man and was a pioneer in merging real-world effects with computer imaging.

Winner of four Academy Awards, Winston was a pioneer in the field constantly pushing the envelope of movie magic to new heights. Whether it be exemplary creature effects, prosthetics work or helping to pave the way for the melding of physical and computer trickery Winston was there, leading the pack. Highly thought of in the industry, his mark of excellence was only exceeded by his gracious spirit and love for the craft.

“The entertainment industry has lost a genius, and I lost one of my best friends with the death Sunday night of Stan Winston,” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement. “Stan’s work and four Oscars speak for themselves and will live on forever. What will live forever in my heart is the way that Stan loved everyone and treated each of his friends like they were family.”

Winston won visual effects Oscars for 1986’s Aliens, 1992’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day and 1993’s Jurassic Park. He also won a makeup Oscar for 1992’s Batman Returns.

Winston was nominated for his work on Heartbeeps, Predator, Edward Scissorhands, Batman ReturnsThe Lost World: Jurassic Park and A.I.

He last worked with director Jon Favreau on Iron Man.

“He was experienced and helped guide me while never losing his childlike enthusiasm,” Favreau said in a statement. “He was the king of integrating practical effects with CGI, never losing his relevance in an ever changing industry. I am proud to have worked with him and we were looking forward to future collaborations. I knew that he was struggling, but I had no idea that he would be gone so soon. Hollywood has lost a shining star.”

At the time of his death, Winston was in the process of transforming his physical makeup and effects studio into the new Winston Effects Group with a team of senior effects supervisors. Winton’s most recent projects included Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, G.I. Joe, Shutter Island and Cameron’s Avatar.

“He ran at full throttle, in both work and play, and was a man of kindness, wisdom and great humor,” Cameron said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. “He was a kid that never grew up, whose dreams were writ large on the screens of the world. I am proud to have been his friend, and I will miss him very deeply.”

As a child growing up in Virginia, Winston enjoyed drawing, puppetry and classic horror films. After graduating from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville in 1968, Winston moved to Southern California to become an actor but instead worked behind the scenes and completed a three-year makeup apprenticeship program at Walt Disney Studios in 1972.

Winston passed away at his home on Sunday evening. Winston is survived by his wife, Karen; a son, daughter, brother and four grandchildren.
